Where to find the best waves? Surfing Nayarit Like a Local 🤙🌊

Share

¡Shaka brah! Welcome to Nayarit, let me tell you, surfing here isn’t just about catching waves.

It’s about living the rhythm of coastal Mexico, where every sunrise, every set, and every session feels like part of a bigger story.

First Stop: Punta Mita

We kick things off in Punta Mita, the surf hub of Riviera Nayarit.

Imagine paddling out at Punta Burros, where a glassy right-hander peels perfectly against the backdrop of the Sierra Madre.

Longboard? Shortboard? Doesn’t matter, Burros delivers fun for everyone. A little further down the trail, we hit La Lancha, where beginners stand tall on their first waves while local families picnic on the sand.

The jungle path that leads to this beach already feels like a mini adventure.

And if you’re chasing something more, we hop on a panga to The Cove.

Locals swear it’s the best wave in Banderas Bay, and the ride out is half the fun, just you, the ocean breeze, and that rush of knowing you’re about to score.

Sayulita Vibes

From there, lets go straight into the heart of Nayarit surf culture: Sayulita.

This town is pure energy, colorful streets, surfboards stacked outside every shop, and music spilling out of cafes. Out in the water, the waves are playful and consistent.

Beginners get stoked riding the whitewater, while more experienced surfers line up for those clean little rights and lefts.

Sure, it gets crowded, but trust me, the lineup here feels like a festival. You paddle out and suddenly you’ve got friends from every corner of the world

San Pancho Power

Now, if you’re ready to step it up, we drive ten minutes north to San Pancho. This isn’t your mellow beginner’s wave, it’s stronger, faster, and more powerful.

On a good swell, you’ll feel that adrenaline surge as you drop in.

It’s where I bring friends who want to push themselves, and even just standing on the beach watching the sets roll in gives you goosebumps.

North to San Blas

Finally, we chase the legend: Matenchen. They say you can ride a single wave here for more than a mile.

Imagine standing up once and just… never stopping. Around the corner, breaks like Stoners and Lolas add the kind of punch that has pros grinning ear to ear.

The vibe in San Blas is raw, less polished, and that’s exactly what makes it magic.

It’s surf in its purest form, nature, power, and freedom.

Why Surfing Here Feels Different

The beauty of Nayarit is the balance. In one morning, you can share a mellow wave with a kid learning to surf and by afternoon be watching seasoned riders carve deep lines on a reef break.

You’ll meet fishermen launching pangas, artists painting surfboards, and locals who treat the ocean like family.

Every wave you ride here feels connected to the culture around it.

Final Paddle Out

So here we are, boards sandy, hair salty, hearts full. Surfing in Nayarit isn’t just a sport.

It’s a lifestyle, a celebration, a reminder to flow with whatever wave life throws your way.

And when you paddle back to shore as the sun sets behind pelicans gliding low, you’ll understand what every surfer here already knows: this coast changes you.

Shaka bro. Welcome to Nayarit 🤙
